How to market on Reddit without getting banned
Bans come from pattern rather than from a single post, and the outcome that is hardest to undo is not the one most people worry about
Quick answer: Bans come from pattern, not from a single post. The reliable triggers are a new account posting links, the same message across multiple subreddits, and any tool posting on your behalf. Post from one real account you also use normally, read each subreddit's self-promotion rule before you post in it, disclose that you built the thing, and make the comment useful with the link removed. The risk that is hardest to undo is a domain ban, not an account ban.
Reddit is the highest-leverage place to find early users and the easiest place to burn your product's name. Both are true for the same reason: the community moderates itself and has very little patience for people treating it as a distribution channel.
This is what actually triggers removals, in rough order of how much damage each one does.
The thing that is hardest to undo
Most people worry about their account. The more serious outcome is a domain ban: moderators can configure a subreddit to automatically remove any post or comment containing links to your site. It happens silently. Your comments appear normal when you are logged in and are invisible to everyone else.
You will not get a notification, and you can spend weeks posting into a subreddit that deleted every one of your comments on arrival. If a subreddit matters to you, this is the thing worth being careful about, because appealing it means messaging moderators who have already decided what you are.
What triggers removals
- A new account posting links.Reddit's spam filtering weights account age and karma heavily. An account created this week posting a link is the single most reliable way to be removed automatically, before any human sees it.
- The same message in several places. Cross-posting near-identical comments is the pattern automated tools produce and the pattern moderators look for. One good comment in one thread is safer and works better.
- Ignoring the self-promotion rule. Most subreddits have one in the sidebar. They differ wildly: some ban links, some allow with disclosure, some confine promotion to a weekly thread. There is no general rule to learn, which is why you read each one.
- Comments that only exist to mention you. Even where technically allowed, a comment that answers nothing gets downvoted into invisibility, which achieves the same outcome as removal with extra steps.
Why automated reply tools are the biggest risk
There is a category of tool that finds keyword matches and posts a reply mentioning your product for you. ReplyGuy is the clearest example: on Reddit it is fully automated, and it supplies purchased accounts to post from, because a fresh account would be filtered instantly.
Operating purchased accounts for promotion is a direct violation of Reddit's user agreement, so the accounts are disposable by design. Your product name is not. It is attached to every reply those accounts make, and it is the thing that remains when the account is gone.
The most persuasive evidence here comes from inside the category. Redreach, which sells into the same market, refuses to automate posting and says so plainly: "we automate the research, the intent filtering, and the reply suggestions, but you post from your own account", citing Reddit banning around 70% of automated accounts. A competitor giving up the easier product is worth more than any vendor's marketing claim. The full comparison is here.
An approach that works
None of this means you cannot promote a product on Reddit. It means doing it as a person.
- One account, used normally. The same account you comment from about things you actually care about. Age and history are the assets here, and they only accrue one way.
- Answer first, mention second. Roughly four fifths answer, one fifth product. The answer earns the upvote, and the upvote is what makes the comment visible.
- Disclose."I built this, so obviously I am biased" costs you nothing and converts a reportable comment into a credible one.
- Pass the removal test. Delete the product mention from your draft. If what remains is still worth posting, post it. If nothing remains, you were writing an ad.
- Three a week, not thirty. Volume is the pattern that gets caught. Depth is not.
If finding those three threads is the hard part, there is a repeatable method that takes about forty minutes a week and needs no paid tools.
One thing to check before buying any tool
Ask how it gets its Reddit data. GummySearch, which was the best research tool in this category, closed on 30 November 2025because Reddit's API policies forbid commercial applications and it could not reach a licensing agreement. That pressure applies to every tool built the same way, so it is a fair question to ask before an annual plan.
Where OctoLoops fits
OctoLoops was built around the constraint rather than against it. It never posts anything and has no posting integration at all, so there is nothing to get banned. It uses no Reddit accounts, purchased or otherwise. Thread discovery runs across the public search index rather than Reddit's API, which is the licensing problem that closed GummySearch.
The Community Loop finds three live threads worth commenting on, drafts a specific comment for each after reading the conversation, and gives you the direct links. You edit, decide whether the thread is right, and post from your own account. That last step is deliberately not automated, because it is the step that keeps you out of trouble.
The plan is free and so are the first 10 loop runs, with no account needed to try it. The trade-off is throughput: three considered comments a week is a different activity from a hundred automated replies a month, and only one of them is safe to attach your product name to.
Try it on your own app
OctoLoops reads your site, scores the ten channels worth trying, and runs a Community Loop that finds live threads and drafts a comment for each one. You post them yourself, from your own account. The plan is free and always will be, your first 10 loop runs are free, and you do not need an account to see either.
