If AI is for everyone, what is left for indie developers?
Mark Zuckerberg's case for personal superintelligence, and why cheaper building makes distribution, trust, and judgment more valuable
Quick answer: If powerful AI becomes cheap and widely available, far more people will be able to build good software. That is great news for indie developers, but it also means that writing code faster will not be much of a moat. The advantage moves to choosing a worthwhile problem, understanding a narrow audience, earning trust, and building a repeatable way to reach users.
Mark Zuckerberg has published a long essay called The Future is for Everyone. It is part prediction, part policy proposal, and part explanation of where Meta wants to go next.
The essay asks two big questions about superintelligence: who gets access to it, and what do we ask it to do? Zuckerberg's answer is that it should not be controlled by a small group of companies or governments. It should be available to individuals, who can use it to create things, start businesses, learn, improve their health, and make their own choices.
That vision is obviously convenient for Meta, a company that wants to put AI products in the hands of billions of people. Still, the essay contains a useful argument for anyone building an app alone or in a small team. If AI keeps reducing the cost of turning an idea into software, indie development will become more possible and more competitive at the same time.
What Zuckerberg is arguing
The essay rests on three ideas:
- Individual empowerment. People should get powerful tools directly, instead of waiting for large institutions to decide how those tools are used.
- Invention over automation. The largest benefit of AI may not be doing today's work more cheaply. It may be helping people discover, design, and create things that do not exist yet.
- A balance of power. Broad access to capable models and open technology can prevent too much economic and political power from gathering in one place.
From there, Zuckerberg describes personal agents, creative tools, tutors, health assistants, scientific discovery, and a much more entrepreneurial economy. He expects people to manifest an idea without first raising money or hiring a large team. He also argues for affordable access, open source models, privacy, independent oversight, and public investment in energy and computing infrastructure.
There are serious open questions in that vision. Compute is expensive. Platforms still set the rules. Personal agents need access to deeply private information. Open models can spread power, but access to chips, distribution, data, and capital can still be concentrated. A future described as being for everyone will not automatically arrive that way.
But we do not need to settle the entire superintelligence debate to see what is already changing for indie developers.
Building software stops being the scarce part
For years, being able to ship an app was a meaningful barrier to entry. You needed technical skill, time, money, or a co-founder. AI coding tools are steadily lowering each of those barriers. A single person can now research a market, sketch the interface, write the code, produce support material, and run basic operations with help from agents.
This creates the one-person product studio Zuckerberg imagines. It also creates thousands of one-person product studios competing for the same attention.
When everyone can build, the hard part is knowing what deserves to be built and finding the people who care.
Speed will still matter. It lets you test more ideas and respond to users faster. But speed by itself is not defensible when your competitors use the same models. Customer knowledge, good judgment, taste, reputation, and relationships become more valuable precisely because they are harder to generate on demand.
Look for invention, not just cheaper labour
The distinction between invention and automation is one of the best parts of the essay. Many AI products begin with a familiar pitch: do an existing task in less time. That can make a useful business, but it is also the most obvious idea for every other builder with access to the same technology.
A stronger question is: what useful outcome was too difficult, expensive, or personalised to offer before now? Perhaps a tiny business can have software tailored to its odd workflow. A specialist can turn years of knowledge into a guided service. A consumer app can adapt to each person's goals instead of forcing everyone through the same funnel.
Small markets that once looked uneconomic may become good indie markets. If the cost of building and serving them falls far enough, niche knowledge and close customer contact can beat scale.
Distribution becomes the scarce resource
More software does not create more hours in anyone's day. Customers still need to discover a product, understand it, trust it, and decide that changing their habits is worth the effort. As app supply grows, those steps get harder rather than easier.
This is why indie developers need a distribution habit, not merely a launch. Talk to people in the communities where the problem already appears. Publish useful explanations. Follow up with early users. Notice the language they use. Improve the product and the message, then repeat.
AI can help with research, drafts, and repetition. It cannot decide which relationships deserve care, or manufacture a reputation for being consistently useful. The more generic content agents produce, the more valuable a recognisable human point of view becomes.
Your next customer may be an agent
Personal AI also changes how apps are found and used. A user's agent may compare products, read documentation, move data, call an API, or complete a workflow on the user's behalf. That makes clear product pages and machine-readable information more than an SEO concern.
Indie products should make themselves easy for both people and agents to understand. Explain exactly who the product is for. Publish good documentation. Offer structured data, exports, and APIs where they make sense. Let customers take their data with them. Avoid locking the whole product to one model provider if a small amount of abstraction gives you room to switch later.
Trust belongs in the product too. If an app handles personal context, say what is stored, why it is needed, and who can see it. Give users useful controls. A small developer cannot outspend a platform, but can be clearer, more accountable, and closer to the customer.
A practical indie playbook
- Choose a narrow customer before choosing a broad feature. Specific knowledge is a better starting advantage than generic AI.
- Search for newly possible outcomes. Do not stop at replacing a task. Ask what could not be offered at all before AI lowered the cost.
- Use agents to increase the number of learning loops. Ship, talk to users, observe, and revise more often, rather than generating more features in isolation.
- Build distribution while you build the product. Useful community participation, writing, partnerships, and direct conversations compound over time.
- Keep trust and technical options open. Make privacy legible, data portable, and model choices replaceable where practical.
The opportunity is real. So is the competition.
Zuckerberg's future is optimistic: capable personal AI gives more people the power to invent, work independently, and build businesses. Indie developers should want much of that future. The economic upside of creating a small, durable business is not limited to becoming wealthy. It includes autonomy, useful work, and the chance to serve a group of people on your own terms.
Just remember that access to the same powerful tools does not produce the same results. The winners will not simply be the people who generated the most code. They will be the ones who understood a real problem, made careful choices, earned attention without wasting it, and kept going long enough to learn.
